Occasionally I may have a piece or two in my
shop that are for sale, but generally a piece of furniture is
built to a
request,
it takes
between two weeks and two months, depending on design, fit-up and
finishing conditions from start to finish. Depending on the pieces
I build, whether I’m designing a new piece or two, or if I’m
sharpening my preverbal saw by learning something new, I will produce
between 6 to 26 pieces per year. When I’m not doing a show,
or attending marketing workshops, or woodworking schools, I have
created custom commission pieces for collectors and private clients,
and galleries.
The pieces that I make are limited editions that I design
and build various intricate fixturing and processes
for, so that I can create
and build a unique piece of furniture that no one else is building,
yet be able to offer the piece to several interested collectors
or clients vs. a single person, if I did only commissioned
work. There
is no one else that I am aware of that is building anything quite
like the pieces that I have designed, and am building.

Project
costs:
None of the pieces are straight forward or simple pieces to build. I use the
best materials I can find, from the wood, to the hardware, to the finish. A
new design usually takes two to three of months of conceptual drawings, laying
out pieces, designing and building needed fixturing, then building and rebuilding
of the piece until I get the look and the structure that I want. The finished
product that will be a limited edition that will still take days to build each
time.
Most of my pieces will have a final cost of $1,000 to $10,000.
Because my pieces are limited editions, the costs are much less than commissioned
work, because I can use a fixture that I have built, more than once; or I can
build two pieces at the same time to get a little better efficiency, due to
a few less setups of processes; and I don’t have to create another design
each time I build another piece.
Upon deciding to purchase one of my pieces, a signed contract is drawn up and
sent. Upon returning the contract with the customer’s signature and a
50% deposit of the final cost, materials will be purchased, and the piece will
be started. Upon completion of the piece, and prior to delivery, I can send
a picture, or the client can come and inspect the piece if they like. The other
half of the payment plus shipping will be due prior to shipment or delivery
of the finished piece. The price of shipping is quoted out to the client at
cost, with no markup.
I have found through my experience that this method of building unique pieces
of furniture, has worked well for me and my clients. It seems to run smoothly
and gives security to everyone involved.
Let me know if this is something you wish to pursue, so that I may build you
a piece that you will be excited about now, and in the future!
